Why Haven't You Started Yet? Poem by Clare Suffell-Pearson

Why Haven't You Started Yet?

There’s work to be done today,
They say I have lots to do,
But I’m just too busy to work,
You know what I mean don’t you?

I really try to get started,
I’m sat here ready to go,
“Just get a move on, start writing! ”
The teacher thinks I’m too slow.

Teach doesn’t understand you see,
That I can’t do my English today,
Not with that dragon sat on the school roof,
That simply will not go away.

So, quick as a flash I jump up,
And leap out of the window in a bound,
Shimmy the drainpipe at top speed,
Running fast - feet not touching the ground.

Then at last I am facing the beast,
It’s long scaly neck gleaming green,
It’s eyes are fire red jewels,
It’s fang clustered snarl so mean.

I brandish my trusty sword,
And swipe at the monstrous beast,
It swings it’s tail all spiky and barbed,
It will have me for it’s feast!

It’s sound has me shaking,
And petrified with shock,
The roar is a thousand waves,
Smashing against the rocks.

I parry again and this time a hit!
I poke him in his scaly belly,
He yelps and fire shoots out of his mouth,
Orange, smokey and smelly!

Again I battle on with the dragon,
Locked in an epic fight,
Until one lucky swipe hits it’s wing,
And it roars with all of it’s might.

Victory! I cry as the dragon,
Limps into the sky and away,
I have conquered the terrible beasty,
I have truly saved the day!

And as I make my way back to my seat,
You can see why I had no time,
To write a story for my teacher,
Or a poem with lots of rhyme.

The fact that you have saved the day I am sure your teacher will understand. A beautiful flow of excitement. Thank You
