Why Africa Would Not Bow Poem by Chukwuemeka Ezeamalu

Why Africa Would Not Bow

Why Africa would not bow
Before the ruthless craving wights
Whose greed to conquer; sailed and stow'd
Throughout the beauteous Africa's bights

They bared their desire to learn and explore
But concealed their intent to kill and exploit.
They were smooth in giving gifts she did not implore
Yet, swift with swords against her heirs; destroyed.

But Africa had never and will not bow
Not even to the worst drought and famine.
Arriving tides has ever been kind with her bays
Thus, carrying abundant number of fishes.

But even when Africa had cried,
The ebbing tides welcomed her tears
And the heaven joined hands with tides
To cleanse her feet with tender care.

On the peak of its high mountains
Where its opulence beat and sounding
Through the base and breadth of its dales
They echo and keep her hearty and hale,

The heart and thick of its untrodden jungles
Serve the greatest beasts and the swiftest eagles.
The great cats fleet and hunt in its savannas
And oases ensure lives in the deserts of Sahara

With bliss and fair has nature kept her time
Thus, the cocks lift heads in crows and bow
Announcing the wake of a new day on time
And chickens come to roost at end of a day

The hammattern shakes off the lifeless woods
Paving way for new branches to flourish and bloom
The whistling trees, the cracking woods and the falling leaves;
They all fill the air with songs and sounds that nature gives.
