Whole Night Poem by Emmanuel George Cefai

Whole Night

In the whole night
the whole time
romantic night lamps black
shine in the street
of an ancient town.

Bridge of wood
Ancient wood
Carved centuries gone
Yearning with sighs
Of lovers and of ghosts.

Strait alleys
House to opposite
House
Whispering.

the steps alight
as it were day
without the
obfuscating heat

but ah! romantic more
in nights of thunderstorms
and tempests and of rains
glittering on the white
lighted steps:
then
will the soul of old Valletta
roam and speak:
'My days that were past are
Now these’
