White, Red On Yellow Poem by gershon hepner

White, Red On Yellow

White and red and yellow
Rothko thought more mellow
than mountains that are grandiose,
or portraits. Figures can be gross
and mountains overwhelm the view,
but colors, when they're few and pure,
achieve a balance of pure reason
in every place, in every season.

Inspired by a 1953 painting by Mark Rothko, acquired by the Metropolitan during the stewardship of Philippe de Montebello.
