Where I'M From... Poem by Celia Delk

Where I'M From...

I'm from times of struggle and sadness,
from a teenager who grew up too fast,
from determination, will power, and bravery,
from a mother whose every thought considered my well being,
from a man not worthy to be called my father,
to savior who continues to love unconditionally.

I'm from using training wheels,
to riding independently and crashing frequently,
from west to middle,
from smiles and giggles and frowns and tears,
from gardens attempted and forgotten
from cigarrette smoke and diesel trucks,
to weed mazes and club houses.

I'm from caring too little and too much,
from lost house keys and washed cell phones,
from raindrops and moonlight,
from dew drops and sunlight,
from much loved blue bears and worn out teddy bears,
from honeysuckle hunting and firefly catching,
to burning toys and balloon cars.

I'm from vicious tornadoes,
from exploded gas stations and ominous fires,
from dalmations and stray cats,
from country roads and crowded interstates,
from music notes read and sung,
from going through books voraciously,
to unwritten stories yet to be told.

I'm from the Board of Education,
from high tech computers,
from 'we'll go next sunday' and Amazing Grace,
from 'xoxo's' and 'ttyl',
from secret places in the woods,
from a slanting barn that eventually fell,
from eleven-o-clock Wal-Mart trips,
to ten-o-clock Cracker Barrell dinners.

I'm from hands burnt on the exhaust pipe of the tractor,
from bowling for the first time at age twelve,
from tool boxes and barb wire fences,
from singing onstage at the Grand Ole Opry, ,
from fireworks and cook outs,
from lying on the road in the cold and dark,
from hoppy birds,
to magic mirrors.
