Where I Am From Poem by jaclyn zweydorff

Where I Am From

I am from Kentucky
From the wild winds that blow
From the tall weeds that are in the fields

I am from beaches
From the white sands in between my toes
The scorching sun

I am from Tennessee
From the small towns
From Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry

I am from the wide open fields
From the sun beaming down so bright
From the tire swing in the tree
Swinging to and froe

I am from the trees that surround my yard
From the tops where the birds sing a happy tune
From the shaded area where I put down my blanket and lay looking at the sky

I am from the school
From kindergarten through the 10th grade (so far)
I am from the cafeteria where I eat my food and laugh aloud with my friends

I am from my grandpa
From the photography shop where we took senior pictures
From the chapel at the church taking pictures for the happy married couples

I am from my brother
From how he has my back
From how he gives me advice on everything

I am from my nephew
From how when he sees me he comes running to me
From how he is so playful always wants to be loved and give love

I am from my mom
From how we are the best of friends
From how we go shopping together and then out to eat

I am from my friends
From the friends that came and never left
From the nights we spent the nights we stayed together

I am from the family gatherings
From how we sit and talk and then play games
From how we play games of corn hole or hitting the piñata

I am from your arms
From the safety you give me
Protect me with your all and tell me it’s ok.

I am from those moments
How I feel safe with you
An important part to my tree of memories.
