Where Are The Fireflies? Poem by Cynthia Buhain-baello

Where Are The Fireflies?

Mystified by a tiny firefly
I gazed in childlike trance
The magical flickering lights -
Did it carry in its hands?

And then came some more
Like earthly stars they twinkle
Around the tree trunk's core
Fairies dancing in a circle.

Fireflies are slowly fading
And I rarely see them now
Our air is suffocating
That is killing them somehow.

Will future children see
The magic of their beauty?
Or see them in the pictures
No lights that flicker brightly.

They come out here in July, and sometimes the cornfields just seem ablaze with them. It would be a sad sort of affairs should they suddenly fade away. I remember catching them as a kid and filling glass jars with them, for one reason or other. This really is a wonderful write, expressive and well planned and with purpose. Much enjoyed.

You are right, our future generation may see them in the pictures as we see the dinosaurs in skeletons.. I like this poem.

A thought provoking write Cynthia. It is sad to see so many of life's pleasures are disappearing. I recently wrote a poem about Fireflies titled FASCINATION. How coincidental is that! LOL! Great minds thing alike. I love your style. Blessings, Rob

A really beautiful and thoughtful poem. Our children will miss out on so much because of the state of our world. And may i say thankyou very much for your comments about me as a poet. I am the same as you, i like to read a poem and enjoy and understand what i'm reading.
