When You'Re Older Poem by R. L. Allen

When You'Re Older

just stop talking
i say

because it's not something
you'll understand until
you're older

how could you understand it
when you say things like that?
when you ask this of me
when we hardly know each other?

just stop talking
i pray

because it's not something
you'll understand
until you're older

how can you be so stubborn
with something like this?
how can you push and push
until there's no force left within you?

do you think i'm that girl?

because I have news for you
my friend

I never was that girl
and I'm never going to be
the girl you're asking me
to become

so I pray to you,
please stop talking

because it's not something
you'll understand until
you're

older
