when you look around today, will you strain to see me
will you scan the crowd,
praying to glimpse my face,
wondering if you will recognize the one you love.
when you look around today, will you see the families,
will you look at the lovers
and be filled with resentment
that I didn’t fulfill my promise to be there?
when you look around today, will you keep your head down,
hoping to avoid eye contact
praying no one will see your tears
and pity the one who has no one to welcome him home.
