I gazed 'pon the sun of the
day,
That sells a wicked ray,
I gazed upon the moon at night;
That floods a shadowed fright.
And my eyes, crimson like a rose,
B'yond what I could disclose
Fears gripped my heart and tears rolled down;
My mild-cheeks, and with frown.
I chased the nightly stars afar,
And severed the love's bar,
The joy of love's gone, never stayed;
And ne'er know where it laid.
But without love, life's null and vain,
E'en man's in nought but pain,
Sadness, sorrow, parted my heart;
Shall I e'er trend love's path?
Shall I love to make a good wife?
Out of this tragic life?
Where love fades away like a dust;
'neath the banner of trust.
