When Mangan Penned Dark Rosaleen Poem by Francis Duggan

When Mangan Penned Dark Rosaleen

When James Clarence Mangan penned 'Dark Rosaleen'
A poem that will live for as long as Ireland's fields are green
Millions of people in Ireland of hunger were dying or were dead
And times never tougher and tough times ahead

But there was great hope in the great poet's song
To the literary greats he is one who belong
In 'Dark Rosaleen' positive energy abound
The spirit of hope in the poem to be found.

At forty six years of age the great poet passed away
But his legacy lives on in the Ireland of today
A tragic figure of the famine he too lived it hard
But of his Nation he's the National Bard.

When Mangan penned 'Dark Rosaleen' Ireland Land of death and tears
And the affects of blight on the potato crop was felt for years
But hope was alive in the words of the poet
And times did get better as history does note.

When Mangan penned 'Dark Rosaleen' 'twas to Ireland he sung
And people of hunger dying many quite young
The great poet himself did not live to be old
But hope springs eternal as we have been told.
