When Abba Sang Poem by Francis Duggan

When Abba Sang

When Abba sang the winner takes it all
It came to me before we walked we crawled
And the race to success is an uphill race
And only one can finish in first place.

The mother boasts my son's done well in life
But he is worthy of a better wife
He says he loves her but love comes at a price
And I still feel that he erred in his choice.

It's always been part of the living game
That not everybody can have wealth and fame
Your lack of success seen as a grave sin
But someone has to lose for you to win.

The high achievers are always in the news
But for one to win so many have to lose
And every loser from the memory quickly fades
And to the winners go the accolades.

The losers we do not wish to recall
As Abba sang the winner takes it all
And the horse who lost the big race by a nose
Is the horse today whose name nobody knows.
