What Was I Thinking? Poem by G. Akanji Olaniyi

What Was I Thinking?

What was I thinking?
On the first day of the month of April
While there were celebrations in big volumes
And change was the word on everybody’s lips

What was I thinking?
When a prayer had just been answered
And all were counting their virtual blessings
Even when victory was as hard as the rock

Was I thinking about Goodluck Jonathan?
No! Not at all! He has done his bit and history is there to judge him
Was I thinking about Namadi Sambo?
No! Not at all! He has been a very willing servant; no doubts about it
Was I thinking about Ayo Fayose?
No! Not at all! He is retracing his steps; he is also a sitting governor
Was I thinking about Bode George?
No! Not at all! He grabbed all he could and he is on his way into exile
Was I thinking about Doyin Okupe?
No! Not at all! He made what he could as the ruthless mouthpiece
Was I thinking about Olusegun Mimiko?
No! Not at all! Whatever happens, he is still the executive governor
Was I thinking about Patience Jonathan?
No! Not at all! She had made history, wealth and returns as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa
Was I thinking about Reuben Abati?
No! Not at all! He was given a juicy opportunity to become someone; he could hardly reject
Was I thinking of Femi Fani-Kayode?
No! Not at all! He had to do what he had to do; survival is the most important thing
All these people have made enough to last at least the next two generations

So, what was I thinking about?
I was thinking about two things; two people
I was thinking about Buhari
The huge task ahead of him; forget all the celebrations as they are mostly hypocritical
The number of people surrounding him; are they not running after their personal interests
The kingmakers and Godfathers that brought him; will they allow him to always think of Nigeria?
The legacy he will leave after four years; will Nigerians clamour for continuity or removal

I was thinking of you and me!
Will we have a better living standard after four years?
Will we have the cause to say we got the change that was needed?
Will we be proud to say we are Nigerians?
Will my motherland be great once again?
What will be in it for you and me, in this change dispensation?
That was all I was thinking about! ! !

(This is a deep reflection on the key actors of the recently concluded general elections in Nigeria)
