What Scares Me? Poem by Stephen Beckett

What Scares Me?

People change, they’ve got their ins and outs,
They think they know what it’s all about
I guess that’s what scares me how they…
They are wrong in all sorts of ways
Nothing is set, anything can change
Everything can change, whether
That be for better or for worse you have to always stay alert
People who never think they’re wrong do what they think is right
People hardly ever think about consequences to actions
Newton’s third law of motion seems to apply everywhere
Every action has an equal and opposite reaction
Just like the yang and ying of a subconscious mind
Thoughts, dreams, trances of the future, of the past and
Of the present, the now, that never goes exactly to our plans
But only to one person, somewhere up above our heads
Through complex clouds and our dense atmosphere
He looks down upon us, with a total understanding and
He’s read this plays script already, he knows it word for word,
Breath for breath, action for action, all that’s left for the
People down here on the ground is to work out why
And those that scare me are the ones who don’t give a damn.
