Western Wind

Rating: 4.1

Western Wind

Western wind, when will thou blow,
The small rain down can rain?
Christ! If my love were in my arms,
And I in my bed again!

A simple poem, in which the speaker expresses longing for a lover, and cries to the wind and the rain, and Christ! for relief. In its simplicity, the utterance is in its purest form - clear, profound, and unpretentious, depicting a true human experience. And so it's not so simple after all, and this is where its poetic power lies: the complexity and depth of experience in its pure and simple form. I like short and simple poems for they say so much in so few words!
