We Will Poem by Matthew Martin

We Will

Rating: 3.8

We'll have our reckoning day.
We'll plough our decapitated nemeses into the paddy,
Fodder for the nettles and rhubarb crowns.

We'll be Arthurian Knights Templar
The Spanish Inquisition
The 7 ages of man

We'll be hieroglyphs on obelisks
Nephila spun on granite plinths
Erect, Davids up on feldspar pedestals.

We'll be immortalized and raised on marble reliefs.
Realized in frescoes and cathedral stained glass
Canonized, beatified and sainted.

We'll be renaissanced and well hung in galleries
Leather-bound volumes,1st editions, embossed in gold
Grafted onto roses, gratified and graffitified on bog walls

We'll be filling hectares of library mahogany archives
Frozen in time, fossilized in shale and tar and peat
Laid down as sediment, petrified.

We'll be captured on celluloid
Subject for memoirs and chapters
Cogitated and academicated at viva voce

Honorary named Tap Rooms and Snugs
Endlessly chewed over nuts, pints and pork scratchings
Down the 'Nag's Head'.

We'll be Idols to the Ideal and idol
Proficiency badges for the Scouts
On the money, set in stone.

We'll have our faces licked and stamped on deliverances
Minted into metal as profiled Egyptian pharaohs
Endlessly quoted, Para quoted and misquoted

Our size quantified in astronomical units,
Light years or Belgians
Our impact measured in megatons of TNT.

We'll be set amongst the star constellations
Orion's, Heavenly bodies, ordinary buddies.
We'll be gravity, gravitas, magnetism, and Cosmic bursts

We'll be prayers, mantras and chants
Whispered along with the prophets
Elijah, Mohammad and Jesus
Abraham, Marvin and John-
Paul and by George remembered.
