We Are Our Injuries Poem by Elizabeth Castleberry

We Are Our Injuries

Rating: 4.5

Lonely yellow
Laying on the floor
From head to toe
Feeling sore
Bad old injuries acting up again
But it's not the bad knee
Or back injuries from way back when
Over time he'll see
Picking scabs only makes scars
Perfect for reminding you
About what happened under those stars
And when the sky, for you, was blue
The burn mark on my leg that publicly displays
The burn mark on my heart
From seemingly different days
Fire is the same from the start
His only goal is to make it worse
He wants everyone to see
What she made him with her curse
Why he can never be
Trusting of himself
Today he's afraid of his own bite
She broke his heart herself
So it would get done right
Now he can't escape it, then
No matter what he does
When we forever bear the burden
We are our injuries
