Want Poem by Susan Adams

Want

Sheets once scattered with pools of hope
are patient
the chequered patterns from
dried unions
now stains to stroke.

Soft fingers trace each shape
and her inside carves
with the same desire
as joy lisps
from the rewind of nights.

She removes her clothes
slides slowly onto the old patches
and once again
hugs herself closely.
A tear slips from the corner of her eye.

With lips over each stain
one by one
breathes warmth in soft huffs
that sperm will swim again,
make a life.

Like a kitten at milk,
she licks and sucks
until her mouth is full
with the spittle of belief.
Nothing is left but the cleaned sheet.

She will not swallow
keeps it all inside,
if only she could conceive
in her cheek she wouldn't eat
for the next nine months.
