Valentine Reversal Poem by Steve Gregory

Valentine Reversal

To have and to hold has failed with me, no more the lover
Or caresser of dreams that hold a heart close to mine with
No knowledge of love and loves labour lost is a memory
Of a romance once held dear, now lost in the annals of time,
Dancing with the roses, stepping on the thorns and finding
Pain in the asking, while trying to show joy in the heartbreak
Of failed love and shattered visions of years together forever.
So a look in the mirror, reflecting the candour of life well lived,
As the dream of family fade into reality of solo walks against the
Winds of change, then swim upriver to try and begin anew with
Nothing but dreams, appearing as nightmares and nothing is as it seems.
Do the rains fall in the desert of dreams or the wind in the valley of kings
Will the snows cover the land when the sun shines on icy ways?
Life is a misogyny and misandry with no one winning the war of words,
And fire and ice will suffice to keep lovers apart from each other.

Oh Valentine heart stabbed with Eros arrow, never a sorrow sobs
From the marrow of the soul as sacrificial lamb to the trials of
Bad choice in love, when two hearts thought as one, disagreed
As sharp as a six shooter empties in a war of words escaping the mouth
And flowing into the stream of resentful thought that brought down
A marriage and filled the shotgun with lead that ended the love of
The two, now stopped burning, the passion frozen like a yogurt left
In the ice box as the company is parted and all life happening departed
Across the room of falling dreams and failed romance, but balance comes
To the soul, if the soul is living, but a lie lives too, when love has lost
And no one looks at the other but stares at the floor or the ceiling,
Wishing for the earth to open and cursed the day Valentine came and
Stole the heart, but left a concrete bunker that became a shelter in a storm.
Why Eros did you look my way and turn my head to see the dread
Of love that killed the music as video killed the radio singer and
Valentine danced on the grave of love as Eros fled in the night.
