Uninhibited Wide Open And Robust

Uninhibited, wide open and robust
the First Amendment ought to be, said Brennan;
the same, of course, became the theme concerning lust
that Yoko would encourage in John Lennon.
What applies to freedom of our speech applies
to freedom that I give to you to be
robust and uninhibited, avoiding lies,
your legs wide open, if on this point you agree.
Though life’s what happens when you happen to be making
other plans, as John explained, when you
have finished making them the State should not be taking
your freedom for the things you say and do.
The Bill of Rights protects your legs when open wide,
robustly uninhibited, and boney fide.

Charlie Rose interviewed Lee Bollinger, President of Columbia University, whose new book on freedom of speech is entitled “Robust, Uninhibited, Wide-Open.” This title derives from the statement by Supreme Court Justice William Brennan: “Debate on public issue should be robust, wide-open, uninhibited.” As pointed out in my poem “Making a Plan, ” John Lennon once said: “Life is what happens while you’re busy making other plans.”
