Undead Love Poem by Amelia Murray

Undead Love

I am now a lonesome being,
waiting.
Waiting for forever to arrive.

It wasn't always so.
I used to be lost.
Walking without an anchor.

Until I saw the eyes of a child.

Years ago I had a friend,
a partner
and a lover.

The memories still skip across my mind.
Swinging on my brain waves
and making my tear ducts function again.

It was so long ago,
but I remember it like yesterday.

You were drifting without purpose.

It was an abandoned festival.
Closed for some supernatural reason.
The ferris wheel turning slowly in the cold wind.
Soft murmurs coming from the abandoned machines.

A friendly helium balloon lead me to the scene.

The gates struggling against their hinges,
trying to follow the terrified mortals home.
As if it could provide protection.

The stalls stood empty and rejected.
Clustered together as if for comfort.

An armless doll lay on the decaying grass.
A remake of a little child.
Maybe the owner of the doll was forced to leave her behind.
She didn't have a choice, either plastic or society.
No acceptance remains.

You were there, staring at the doll.
Thinking the same as what I was.
Open minds have been destroyed.

We didn't have voices.
We had to lead each other.
Whether into dark
or multicoloured motionless seats.

The crows seemed to enjoy the company.

My feet moved roughly over the crispy grass,
but I couldn't feel it in my blue skin.

The night sky started lighting up.
Town lights were coming on.

You took my hand in one of your shaky ones.
Looked me in the eyes.

Your eyes still had green splashed in them.
Mine had lost all colour.
You leaned in as far as you could without breaking.
I closed the space and touched my lips to yours.

I tried to remember how it was to have nerves,
how it was to feel someone’s lips.

Both our eyes were open,
except for your right.
It was using its last strength to perform.
It would probably stay like that now.

The town lights seemed to be getting brighter.
I heard soft metal music playing.

You lead me to the swings.
It felt like we would swing into eternity together.
The metal music was loud now.

You lifted a red rose and placed it behind my ear.

I tried to smile with my undead lips.
You pointed down.
I tried to look
but something had snagged the back of my shirt.

I looked at you and saw fire in your eyes.

The lights had come with metal spears and pitchforks.
They didn't want to try and listen to me.
I needed to tell them to be careful,
I needed to tell them to look for a man.
To look for the man that was leading them.

To be wary of the man who killed me,
but they wouldn't listen to me.

I tried to move to you.
I tried to tell you to run.
I tried.

I was mobilized with the spear in my back.
I couldn't help you.

The rose fell to the ground with my efforts.

I looked for it and found something scribbled there.
It must have been what you wanted to show me.
I stopped struggling.

Forever is where I will find you.
