Transformation Poem by Faustina Marie

Transformation

I spent the summer wrapped up
Safe in my cocoon and itching in my skin
Patiently waiting out the dark
For the new day

Would the sun shine the same?
The grass be the same shades of green?
Would the misty morning air taste as sweet?

Everyone would recognize me still:
I may shed the gray restraints that kept me
The same since middle school
But my body will look no different

I won’t be flying straight away,
Just flutter somewhere new and return to home,
Back and forth until I’m ready to settle
Somewhere

Tasting what the world has to offer
And searching for a place,
Migrating,
Humming along until I find my place

For now, unfurling my wings
And finding my rhythm,
Becoming accustomed to my own colors
And discovering that which I could never
See about myself
Before
