Trainee Bureaucrat Poem by Ananta Madhavan

Trainee Bureaucrat

How did that eager-seeming youth
Investing in his green-stick luck
Neglect by dank degrees to press
His proud new trousers, how?

An aged man became his friend
And told him tales of yesteryear,
Till wearily he held his tongue
As antidote to anecdote.

The aged friend invited him
To blanch his hair and crease his brow
And hide behind an arch of files
And sign himself 'Non Sequitur'.

('Green-stick' in stanza one alludes to a kind
of minor fracture which a child may sustain.
'Non Sequitur' in the last line alludes to a logical fallacy
meaning that a given conclusion does not follow as
a consequence of what has been stated before.)
