Today My Dog Was Put Down Poem by Michael Round

Today My Dog Was Put Down

Rating: 4.5

Of all the dreams
I ever had in my life
I dreamed of my dog most of all.
Often she was lost
As many times in trouble.
Now after many years
Of walking through the woods,
Chasing her beloved ball
Carried there all the way
And brought home safely;
Now after the seasonal days
Of joyful running and a life;
A life so beautiful and full,
I signed the paper:
The warrant for her peaceful death.
And she is gone.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I was 'given' a Staffordshire. She lived with us for many years and was very very old and ready to go. The vet came and I could not watch. My wife dealt with it whilst I hid and wept my eyes a while. My wife said she did not flinch, and was gone in peace in just a few moments. That evening I wrote the poem and the tears flow once more.
