To My Mother (A Forgotten Martyr) Poem by Kevin Patrick

To My Mother (A Forgotten Martyr)

To My Mother a forgotten Martyr
Neither listed in a textbook,
or in the passing of a scripture
But the model of parental virtue
A saintly jewel of unyielding endearment
Who binds the spell of a child's love
Through Crafting a soul from the mold of her hands

Your deeds are multi folded
A Jill of trades of myriad talents-
Diplomat to teenage rage
Physician to a child's tears
And warrior of dirty diapers

Yours is a resume of impeccable qualities
A polyglot from minervas school -
Teacher, provider and moral compass guide
You exceed your occupation with amazing degree
And for that your certified with honored praise
If I had all the fortune from the world for you
It would still be substandard to the things you've given me

Monty, Patton and MacCarthur
I think you got those guys covered
They led their troops on battlefields
But your wounds come from the home front blues
No purple heart from nine months out
To the day you depart, to the final frontier

Never have you faltered
from the fields of family feuds
When grim was the gulf
spread between the home lines
Divided through the doors
When silent anger lingered
But you diligently persisted
Until the aftermath rescinded
And in your saintly demeanor
Repaired the damaged in our souls

A sage of youthful grace, I retired from your insight
Pridefully neglecting the wisdom of your sermons
I naturally inclined myself, down a cul de sac of fully
And in alleys of despair, yours was the saving grace
I treadled through the murk, and to your arms of benediction
Where my salvation was won through the warmth of your heart

They say the greatest joy in life
Is that which a mother conceives
Though blessed more is the child's wealth
Whose gift from God's divine hand
Granted me the pleasure in having you as my mother.
Forever our sovereign majesty.

To my mother my only martyr
