To Live And To Love Poem by Hannington Mumo

To Live And To Love

I never knew it would be possible
Because I had lost all the surest hope,
Charming Mary had trashed my budding optimism
And my ambitions dwindled in a steady slope.

I had even scored through her contacts
For I thought it better to let desire kill,
Without a memory of her littlest trace -
To live parallel like the stitches of a twill.

But one evening she provoked a greeting
And I hazarded a casual favorable reply,
The history began to gradually form,
And since then our affections all senses defy.

And now methinks our eternal troth
Was by the heavens indelibly ordained,
For not the waters of the seamless seas of hate
Can blemish our avowed love with the littlest pain.

I will love and live to be loved
By my stunning Mary;
I will not concern my tender heart
With the aridities that may variously vary
And make me love less my gorgeous Mary.
