Time To Look In The Mirror Poem by Savita Tyagi

Time To Look In The Mirror

Rating: 5.0

'The entire world already knows
That we water- boarded the prisoners'
The entire world also knows that
Our police shot the unarmed man
With raised hand
And policeman was not indicted
The whole world knows
Police kept a man in chokehold
Even after listening that he can't breathe
The whole world knows that
Our citizens are getting paranoid
Can't see the difference between
An adult and child's playground activities
The world knows that
Our government spies on
Its own citizens with out permission
The list goes on and on and on
Stirs the conscience even from a distance
May be it's a time for some soul searching
To remember and stand by the great principles
That define us as a nation
To aspire and hold ourselves together
In forward march for life, liberty
And justice for all
It is time to look in the mirror
And point to that ugly serpent
Of lies and deceit drunk with power
Raising its head steadily
To corrupt that loving image of Democracy
Loved and admired by the entire world
No matter how much we boast about
Being a great nation
Setting high standard of values
For others to follow
We are still humans and fallible
With room for improvement
How long can we hide behind
The words like enhanced interrogation
Or collateral damage or self defense
The flowery language of sophisticated intellect
Invented and renewed every day
To hide and shrink from responsibility
Nothing can set us free from the painful truth
Burning in our national consciousness
But to accept our wrong doings
Examine and correct our mistakes
And walk on the path of virtue
With a heart fearless and confident
And recognize with humility
That we are not the sole guardian of values
That arrogance simply tarnishes
Even the most cherished virtues.

The quote is from Senator John McCain's speech on congress floor defending the release of 'Torture Report' on 12.9.2014.
The poem came as a reaction of some recent and old events that have challenged the core values of American life.

It is time for a soul searching not only for individuals but also for nations! 'Something is rotten in the whole state of Denmark'...... We shall rephrase it as' something is rotten in the whole world'! Not one country alone can be victimized! This is what is happening everywhere! The guardians of Democracy have become its assassins! A bold and powerful write!

An amazing and straightforward look at what is going on here in America! Your poem stirs the heart to admit there are many things wrong here in the U.S., and silently to ourselves we realize and admit what you say is true. So many Americans do the right thing, try to right injustice that they see, yet it seems to be one-sided most of the time. There's so much more wrong being committed here that the media sees fit not to broadcast. It seems that the racists are the ones burning and looting cities, yet they are being portrayed as heroes. Things have turned around somehow and evil is praised instead of condemned. Racists think they are justified in using violence against innocent people that live in their own neighborhoods. I commend you for illuminating these events and not being afraid to speak out. Great poem with a great message, Savita. Thank you for sharing, RoseAnn

The refrain line THE WHOLE WORLD KNOWS is a powerful reminder that we live inside a network of communications in which the whole world CAN KNOW and know INSTANTLY. However (and this is a sad qualification) , there are so many neo-isolationist Americans who just don't care what the world knows or thinks. Your refrain line which should be an alert to their moral conscience (!) , will make some of them mutter So what? and others give Fox News editorials on the theme It's OK for us to protect ourselves because we're the defenders of freedom. And they do feel we are justified in using violence. I don't say this to discourage your type of poem, but to ENCOURAGE it. Inside those two words is the word COURAGE and that is the virtue your poem conveys. Defending the CORE VALUES OF AMERICAN LIFE always requires courage. You have displayed yours!
