Three Trees, Gray Clouds Poem by gershon hepner

Three Trees, Gray Clouds

Three trees, gray clouds, a river, distant hills
for are Jacob Rysdael’s backdropp for the clue
that he provides, explaining why he fills
us with relief: the sky’s small patch of blue.

Inspired by a painting at the Norton Simon Museum, Jacob von Ruysdael’s “Three Trees in a Mountainous Landscape with a River” (1665) , which I admired before seeing a painting by Ingres on loan from the Frick Collection, Ingres’ “Comtesse de Houssonville”.
