They Were Deep In Autumn Poem by JDC LeDrew

They Were Deep In Autumn

In some way I can’t explain I know,
They were deep in autumn
When he died in my brother’s arms.
My brother did the best he could I’m told,
Everything a man could do was done.
But his friend’s heart stopped still before the dawn
And a thousand dreams lay down with him.
I know the dawn ‘rose swift and sure
And in the steady heavens,
Planets turned.
Across the universe, stars shined on
And solar flares still burned.

But back on earth my brother kneeled
Beside his fallen friend.
He searched his mind but found no words
To comfort his friend’s wife.
He searched his soul but found no peace
In this sad loss of life.

And so he wept and thanked his friend
For all the joy they’d shared.
Then set himself off to walk the lonely mile,
Back to the farmhouse to arrange
To bring the body down from the hills.
His own and stranger’s hands carried him down.
He made the call.
And last he made arrangements,
While his mind grew strangely numb.
So in a burst of energy,
Every needful thing was done.

When he set out for home I’m told,
He made it as far as the family ranch,
Where I guess the memories
Pulled him up that familiar road.
And once seated in the living room,
He listened to the steady voices there,
Felt the firm earth beneath his feet,
Felt the center of that place.

So when he lay himself down that night,
My brother did the best he could I know,
To sleep some in the end.
And in loving memory of a friend,
To rise and find himself,
Lost deep in autumn once again.
