The Young Painter.. Poem by R.H. Peppers

The Young Painter..

A young painter approached his mother then exclaimed..
‘I wish i could have been Leonardo Devinci..’

His mother chuckled a little and said..
‘what if I were to tell you that you were Leonardo at one time..
and now you are someone else? ..’

A grimaced look produced on the young man’s face and he all but lashed out..
‘mother! .. please spare me your mystic mumble jumble..
I mean that I want to be a world renowned artist..
one that the world looks up to and admires..’

Hearing her son’s longing desire she thought to ask..
‘which would you rather to be..
a famous painter? ..
or one that simply loves to paint? ..’

The artist thought long and hard before giving his answer..
‘I would much rather be the famous painter..
for I will have the enjoyment of creating masterpieces the world will love..’

His mother further questioned..
‘but what of those you attempt to charm that say..
this painter’s works are bland and lifeless? ’

Her son was quick to respond..
‘that is easy enough..
for them I will paint a portrait of lively figures with vibrant colors..’

With a warm smile his mother continued..
‘and for them of whom are color blinded and say..
his works are not fit even to cover the walls on my pet’s shed? ’

the son pondered then answered..

his mother continued to ask questions
and he answered one after the next..
until the certain point he became wise to her queries..
and did not like it at all.

‘I know what you are getting at mother..
but I will be a great artist someday..
I will work twice as hard as any other..
and the people will praise the works I have made..’

The loving mother leaned forward kissing her son on the forehead and said..
‘I know you will son.. just remember to please have fun..
for the genuine create and make their own path..
but history has been kind to lapdogs as well…’
