The Wiseman And The Fool Poem by Brandon Hoffman

The Wiseman And The Fool

There is a Wiseman in the field
I will watch what he does

The Wiseman sits
He examines the many insects the crawl and fly about
He examines the flowers, watching them gently sway in the breeze
I sit and watch him
Nothing
He does nothing but sit and stare
It is rather boring

Here comes the fool
Full of life, running, jumping and skipping
'Watch me' he says to the Wiseman
As he jumps and twirls and kicks
His energy boundless
His happiness endless

'Why do you just sit there? '
The fool says to the Wiseman
'Come and play with me and have fun
Before you grow old and turn to dust'

The Wiseman responded
'Why would one as wise as me
Participate in such foolishness
It is pointless
No rhyme or reason
All it is you jumping in the air and flailing like a fish out of water
You are nothing but a fool'

The fool looked at the Wiseman
'You may call me a fool
But, if I am such a fool
Then how come I am the one smiling'

'Cause you’re a fool'

'If I am such a fool
Then how come I am the one who is happy
And you are not'

'Cause you’re a fool'

'Maybe to you I am a fool
But at least I can die a happy man with many friends
You on the other hand
You will die unhappy and alone'

So who is the wiser of the two?
The Wiseman or the Fool
