The Winner Is Applauded Poem by Francis Duggan

The Winner Is Applauded

For the gallant loser not one hip hooray
The winner is applauded the man of the day
The tears of ecstasy running down his face
Overcome with the joy of winning the great race
There will be bonfires tonight for him in his hometown
And the band through the streets for him play up and down
'Tis only of the winners a fuss is ever made
And 'tis only for the winners there is a parade
The winners in life their admirers in numbers does grow
And the losers are those that few do wish to know
Tonight in his hometown him they will celebrate
They will sing the praises of a local great
'Tis said winners are grinners and well he may grin
As he sheds tears of joy in his greatest win.
