The Voice Within Poem by Amar Agarwala

The Voice Within

I heard a gentle voice within
Its politeness stood apart,
It urged me that I listen close
To the pleadings of my heart.

The din around had long stifled
What my fate had in its store,
But the voice inside knew it all
And it knew so ever more.

I chose the wisdom of this world
But ignored the Zen within,
Spent endless years to know this truth
Oh what a grievous sin!

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
WHAT THE HEART SAYS

It is ironic that we listen to the world but not to our hearts. I often listen to hordes of students who want to know of how to listen to their hearts, for they feel there are two voices within - their heart and their mind - and they know not, who's who.

Friends, it is not difficult to know what your heart says, but first you need to stifle all the sounds that drowns every syllable your heart utters. There is too much noise in this world, it snuffs out the gentle pleadings of the heart, and veils what our fate has in store for us. We keep following the echoes around, mindlessly, steeped in worldly ignorance but give not a chance to the one within, who knows the truth and is ever willing to gently guide us towards our destiny.
