The Vast Vanity Poem by Shalom Freedman

The Vast Vanity

The vast vanity
Of what I have done
All these years-
All these words
All this writing
And who wants it?
No one.

Like a slave to myself
I continue-
What do I have but the freedom and self- definition
Given by my own writing?

Like a slave to myself
And my own conception
Of what I am
And who I must be
I continue
Writing these words.
