In the prime of his life yet with just a wasted frame
Clad in tattered clothing but he was long immune to shame
Unruffled he would sit while passing pedestrians stared
Munching on a stale loaf, which another tramp had shared
He worried not the morrow; bright sun or lashing rain
But deep was his sorrow if his begging had been in vain
He heard the whippoorwill call as day gave way to night
The shadows lost in darkness, kindled a little fright
His days close to winter, his fate hung in the twilight
The rain came down in torrents, hid the tears in his eyes
While mud stuck to his boots as lightning lit up the skies
Sadly he plodded on, his destination unknown
His way having been lost as autumn's temper was shown
Luckily, he found shelter; a shed with new mown hay
Then spent a night in hunger; not having ate that day
Now winter teased autumn with an early fall of snow
A puddle showed his image, sickly and getting old
In the winter of his days, and yet no place to go
While mud stuck to his boots as lightning lit up the skies' 'His way having been lost as autumn's temper was shown' 'Now winter teased autumn with an early fall of snow In the winter of his days, and yet no place to go' Touched by this poem, particularly the lines above.
