The Sweetest Sound Poem by Dorothy (Alves) Holmes

The Sweetest Sound

The sound made when baby's coo
in lovely bubbled chatter, suddenly new,
sounds, 'words uncharted'
music to our ears,
that always bring a smile,
sometimes a happy tear.

One day, was that mama or dada,
no matter, just more happy chatter.
It thrills us through and through,
so the words don't matter.
One parent or the other
has bragging rights,
they call grandma, and talk all night.
'Words uncharted',
in baby sounds,
so we hold silly conversations,
happiness overwhelms,
a wonderful sensation.

The family gathers around.
Uncharted words in baby talk,
and we think we know what they
are saying...our good sense is decaying.
That sound means time to eat, or is it time
for baby to sleep.
Baby coos another uncharted word.
love fills the room no other sound is heard.
