The Sunshine Has Returned Poem by Diana van den Berg

The Sunshine Has Returned

Sometimes there is a season
of youth and joy
and blue skies
and fluffy little clouds
and solutions
and dreams
and long-lasting happiness...

but sometimes the clouds grow
and burst...
and then the sadness comes
and all seems lost
and the world grows cold
and, oh, the loneliness...

and the heart rains come...
like Noah’s rains...
on and on and on,
and forty days and forty nights
become forty months
of sodden earth
and gray, gray skies
and heavy hearts
and weary eyes.

Sometimes those downturned eyes
will see a tiny flower
rejoicing in the rain
and somehow
the rains embrace the spirit
in compassion
and lift it up...

and the rains fade
and the sun sings
and warms the shoulders
and the wet leaves on trees glisten
in a glow of amber gold
and flower buds burst open everywhere
in a rainbow explosion of colour
and the birds sing
and eyes lift to bless the gift...

and sometimes
somewhere
very special heart finds very special heart
and smiles return
and spirits lift
and hand takes hand
in the gentle dawning
of a beautiful new day
with promises of inconceivable happiness
to be nurtured and honoured and celebrated.
