The Sphinx Poem by Cyprian Kamil Norwid

The Sphinx

The Sphinx barred my way in a dark cave
Ever hungry for truths
Like a publican, beggar or knave
Molesting travellers with cries of 'Truth!'.

*

'Man?... he's a priest ignorant
And green...'
I replied.

*

An behold,
The Sphinx retreated against the rock:
I passed alive !
