The Simple Things Poem by Mike Duralia

The Simple Things

When I met you I never thought
We'd find ourselves so far apart
From where we once had been together
Believing we would last forever

I gave you all I had to give
So you could choose the life you lived
And do whatever you felt best
For you, your kids and all the rest

You had your freedom every day
To chart your course in your own way
I only asked that you respected
A few small things that I'd requested

The simple things I asked of you
Were simple things you wouldn't do

My request was but a simple tenet
Care for our things; maintain our budget
Be mindful that I worked so you
Could do the things you wanted to

Yet time and time again you proved
Your love for me was just a ruse
That my concerns and thoughts and feelings
In fact to you had no real meaning

And when I could go on no longer
You blamed me for not being stronger
Exclaimed that it was all my fault
So in my wound you poured your salt

The simple things I asked of you
Were simple things you wouldn't do

You took from me so very much
Beyond the money and all the stuff
It's hard for me to comprehend
That this is how it has to end
And all because you couldn't do
The simple things I asked of you
