The Shadow Chaser Poem by Yewande Adedokun

The Shadow Chaser

In the midst of high rocks
Down below, it's me it saw
Eyes blazing, the wanted lunch comes along
As it descends, see it taking its time
Gaze fixed on me, my soul taking flight
Heavy breath from both of us
One breaths to devour
Another to give up
It took the final step down
It waits for me to take the first pace
Glued to each other's iris
My sweat pores has given all it got, the air chills
I moved back, it moves forward
Back again, forward again
I turned to an angle where it becomes easy for my feet to take me
I ran forward, it's getting closer
If I could climb the rock on sight fast enough, I could save my life
It came closer, the earth vibrates behind me as it breaths heavy
Two steps more, now I fall as it goes for my left foot
Blood splash and ooze from my neck's artery
Now, it's only my own breath I hear, my heart slows down
As I close my brows.
