The Second Button Poem by Hima chan

The Second Button

I saw you
casually sauntering at the sidewalk
dragging your bag
in your school uniform

And just then
something surfaced
A hidden
hope for a wish

It has been long

It has been a well-kept dream
that I've tried to forget
And had almost been forgotten
Washed away by the tide of time and pain

And then
Wretched tears gripped my heart
As my gaze locked itself
on a singular thing

Just one

I saw
something obscured
The well-kept
second button on your uniform

Even my eyes
screwed up in an effort
Just to look
for the damn button

Like now
Will that time ever come?
Will I ever see
the day that I will be able
to call that second button as mine?

I just wonder when
that one-in-a-lifetime chance will come?

(English Translation of 'Ang Ikaduhang Butones' by me)

(FYI: You have to be acquainted with a certain Japanese love custom to know what the 'poem' means - the custom of guys giving out the second button of their school uniforms as tokens to the girl they love (since the second button is the one closest to their heart)
