The Scavenger Poem by Sapphire Gordon

The Scavenger

When I was a scavenger by the sea,
I'd take all the food I could just for me.
But you emerged and begged me to find,
A piece of happiness,
A piece of mind.
So you told the scavenger 'trample over here,
Soon you'll find the things that you'll hold dear,
Look to the left then look to the back,
Scavenger, Please don't forget your track'
Then I (the scavenger) hiked up the sand,
Hiked up the hills over many a land,
Trailing a line of food just behind,
Hoping to come back with my piece of mind.
When I reached the spot there was only a clearing,
Some noises of animals I was also hearing,
But nothing was there to resemble my mind,
The one I had lost and needed to find.
I looked to the front, then looked to the back,
But I suddenly realised I had lost my track
Of food and all my edible things,
Something had eaten them, Something with wings.
A shadow above me of a feathered creature
Came into view and its magnificent features,
White and beautiful, a pale dove,
Something to nurture, Something to love.
It guided me back to my place by the sea,
And gave me my mind, Just My bird and me.
A scavenger once, A scavenger forever,
But I'll always keep my white dove and I'll always treasure.
