The Sacred Prayer, ‘gayatri' Poem by Ananta Madhavan

The Sacred Prayer, ‘gayatri'

From ancient times, Hindus have recited an auspicious
Morning Prayer in Sanskrit (called a ‘Mantra') , addressed
to the Creator. At the request of a British friend,
I rendered it in English in 1972.

My verse is given below.

Auspicious ‘Om', our sacred call
To the Resplendent Savitr, the Sun,
The inspiring power of all Creation!
We beseech You:

Let us dwell in the radiance
Of that guiding effulgence
That is our light and intellect.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
This is not a translation, since exact equivalents are not
available for the ancient Sanskrit words and concepts; but
the idea of universality and reverence to the power of
Creation enlightening human minds is, for me, worth daily
remembrance and thanks.
