The Reign Of King Koko Poem by DAYO PETERS DESINA

The Reign Of King Koko

THE REIGN OF KING KOKO

The premier abode of
The living books
Hath a shepherd
In the similitude of the king

The tyrant race
Upon the bent bridge
Of laziness of flexible bones
Stinking gutters – crowding
The mouth of malaria flies
Dung-fluttered and scattered
By the doorpost of the books

Our white rug turned brown
Amnesty ridicule crown and scepter
The lion bit and water wells
From the well of the eyes of preys
Conscience – relegated into the
Hymns of Apocrypha

Head – shaped to accommodate
The bairn’s brain
Located at the hind
Of the books’ successes
Abdication from SUTC*
And suffering of the books
Impudent justice rendered
Upon the table of Mr. Abu…

Craving terminologies – grinding
The millstone that produces
Fetish rubbles of the particles
Of Mama Ngozi’s meal for books
This undeserved lamb’s legs
Of mama T’s table square
Are for the books
Whose prey rents the air
Into different phases of
The books’ struggle…

Red juice flowed; the air stinks
The horse’s hoof is harmed
Inhibition of exercised freedom
Crows – silenced by the wave
Of the king’s hand
The fast food fertilizes
The bacteria of the stomach
Simmering touches poisons
The inborn love for the king
The books are independent
The king rules with a plastic hand
Pages fluttered like the sand:

In the reign of King Koko.

POSTSCRIPT:
And it so happened that when the book of history was turned, a name appeared in black, overshadowing all other names with its colour and properties. Blood dripped and soaked the garment of Mellanby Hall in red. The book of times shall again be opened soon, let’s hope that this same blood shall not drench our clothes then!
