The Quest Poem by Daniel Brick

The Quest

Rating: 5.0

The waves carry my frail ship
across a shining sea.
A haze covers distant islands,
makes them shimmer in the water.
I stare at them,
those patches of land and rock.
One will become my home,
a place to which
I must always return.

I see this island in my dreams.
A shore of whitest sand
gives way to gray rocks,
loose, falling toward the sea,
moving backward in time
toward the wet birth of all things.
As I wander inland,
I smell cinnamon and cloves.
A maiden beneath palms dances in silence.

POET'S NOTES ABOUT THE POEM
I love the theme of JOURNEY in literature, because it also plays out in our lives - if we're paying attention. I had no expectations of a finished poem when I started jotting down these images. But the poem came WHOOSH! and it was done. I have not made any revisions because I think its spontaneity is its essence.

Very often island in my dreams - is better than in the best reality!

Spontaneity is its essence - and it feels the same while reading it; it flows naturally and free... and to me, it brings in mind an accurate description of a little volcanic island - just across Thira, on the Island of Santorini (a little paradise on earth!) . I very much enjoyed the tender and romantic end of the poem! :)

Here the mind is quietly in quest of a silent island where from the peaceful mind may observe the expanse of the vast ocean and the beautiful green island also. A simple and serene wish of the mind.

Man is on an eternal quest..... looking for places where his spirit can dwell in peace. The poet has found one such place in the far off seas... may be a small island away from the vexations of life from where he can watch the undulations of the sea, where some fond fragrances waft into his nostrils through the salty air, where memories of a dancing damsel come to warm his mind! An etherial experience is created here! The poem stands out for the unlaboured ease with which it folds out!
