The Platypus And Echidna Poem by Francis Duggan

The Platypus And Echidna

Rating: 5.0

The Platypus and Echidna peculiar and strange
Animals that in some way act like reptiles and birds 'a sort of interchange'
Found only in Australia Homeland of Marsupial Roo
Than Platypus and Echidna you'll not find stranger two.

Platypus with duck like bill and duck like webbed feet
Go swimming out bush waterways in search of worms to eat
And she lay eggs like bird do yet all the experts say
That Platypus is an animal though bird like in some way.

Those who have seen Platypus in wild state are of the chosen few
And I have only seen one in royal Melbourne zoo
For Platypus is shy creature and she live far as she can
Away from man made concrete and from the haunts of man.

Echidna resemble Hedgehog but she too lay egg like bird
A most peculiar mammal and strange for her the word
She's also known as spiny anteater but what is in a name?
As Echidna and Spiny anteater are one and of the same.

I've seen Echidna in Sherbrooke forest and she dug herself in quick
And my dog who tried to seize her yelped from a nasty prick
And my dog has learnt her lesson well those quills she's learnt to fear
And now she bark at Echidna but dare not go too near.

The Platypus and Echidna the strangest of the strange
Mammals that in some way act like birds 'a sort of interchange'
Found only in Australia homeland of the Kangaroo
Than Platypus and Echidna you'll not find stranger two.
