The Pharmacist Poem by JAMES T. ADAIR

The Pharmacist

I walked into the pharmacy
Went to the pharmacist
I said I don't have a prescription Miss
But would you offer some help to me?

She said sure you look like a nice guy
Why is it that you cry
I said Why do you say that?
Is there something in my eye?

She said No but I see it in your face
You know when you're feeling down
It's something that you hide but can't erase
I thought I smiled at you I said

And she shook her head to disagree
I see people every day she said
and you remind me of me
Is there something you would like to see?

I looked around both ways to be sure nobody would hear
I turned to her, pointed at my heart and said
It's hurting a lot in here
She said I know, I can tell, and I thought it most ironic

She looked at me with understanding eyes
and she looked me over twice
She touched my hand and stroked it gently
And she said I know just the tonic

I felt her warmth rush through my veins
and get right underneath the pains
And then she said you know there's nothing wrong with you
You just need a good woman to care for you

I dropped my glance and hid my eyes
And felt a teardropp trickle down my face
I muttered, Yes I know you're right...
But I've searched for her everyplace

She said I could love you, but I can see you eyes are afar
She wiped my tear with her fingers so genlty
As I rested my elbows on the bar
I said darling you're an angel... I know you are

You have a feeling for someone in your heart she said
and to that I reluctantly nodded my head
What's wrong then, let her know you care
I did I said, but she hardly realizes I'm there

See there is someone else lately who I feel
And now I'm confused what is and isn't real
She said, I understand, I think I know the deal
You feel broken and you just need to heal

She left the counter for a time and then she came back
I couple of bottles she placed in a white paper sack
She said I'll give you just the things you need
I can see that you are hurting, indeed

I said what is it you're giving me, I felt a little like a dope
She winked and said...these should do the trick:
She said...One bottle is Faith
The other bottle is Hope

As she handed me the packet she bent over
And kissed me on the head
She said the one who loves will find her way to you
I pray for you that your love is forever kind and true

I kissed her back most gently on her cheek
With admiration, love for the kindness she did speak
But I'll never forget the kind glow of her face
Upon it I felt I had seen and felt God's grace

Later I awakend from the dream
Feeing somewhere lost in time and space
But the bottles that she gave me in the dream
I try to keep them in a safe place
