The Newspaper Headlines Poem by Francis Duggan

The birds call on the gray gum trees nearby
And rain comes drizzling from gray Winter sky
And i feel tired and i look old and gray
And perhaps i too have seen a better day.

The newspaper headlines don't read well today
In Moe Town one hundred miles away
The police search for the body of a baby boy
Why the innocent must suffer wonder why? .

Why are newspaper headlines mostly sad?
They only paint humanity as bad
To print tragic stories they seem too inclined
And to many acts of human goodness they seem blind.

The weather today well matches my mood
I long for joy and peace and solitude
But humans from their troubles cannot fly
Is Paradise on Earth another lie?

Though the police search the ponds and dams and lakes around
The child missing in Moe yet not found
And the newspapers the tragic story tell
They seem to thrive on other peoples hell.
