The Newsagents Poem by ANDREW BLAKEMORE

The Newsagents

Rating: 5.0

As the morning sunlight brightly shone
Through the window of the corner shop,
It lit the rows of pop bottles
That stood upon the shelves.

Their coloured rays made patterns
As they streaked across those salmon tiles,
Some cracked and worn yet all were stained
By footmarks of the past.

The wall was stacked with magazines
Some bent and creased and out of place,
And lined the narrow pathway
To the counter straight ahead.

Where stood the lonely shopkeeper
Behind those tiers of chocolate bars,
Who leaned against the cigarettes
And stared unto the door.

As he waited for that bell to ring
To break the silence of the morn,
Then greet the same old faces
And to pass the time of day.

Nice one Andy, we have all been into a newsagents like the one you describe, my friend and I used to spend all of 15 minutes deciding what to buy with our 6d tuck money, usually we had sherbet dabs, good punchline to this as well, thanks, Hope it makes the top 500 for you, Lynda xx 10

A very enjoyable poem Andy. I like your diversity., That ability to work your art and craft on many a varied topic. Sadly, such shops as you talk about are destined to become a thig of the past. I guess that's the high price of progress. Who needs a corner shop when you can go to Asda? . Personally I'd take the corner shop any day. It's one of the last bastions of true Britishness. The personal one to one touch that nobody seems to have time for in our ever growing faceless populus. Steve (Never had a poem in the top million) Stirk

What a sensitively penned nostalgic piece depicting that endangered breed of 'small businessman' that is slowly being crippled by large multi-nationals with bright lights and garish logos. Beautifully written as usual, Andrew. Love, Allie ♥ ♥ ♥ ♥

It is very sad to see Shopkeepers standing, waiting for some custom to come through the door, a somewhat lonely existence and then the odd conversation about probably nothing in particular. Having had a shop I know the feeling. Ha! Good storyline, and you have captured the essence of the Newsagents very well indeed. Love and hugs Ernestine XXX

I love how you start with the sunshine and end with something different than expected. I like the stanza 'where stood the lonely shopkeeper behind those tiers of chocolate bars'. People like the shopkeeper are losing so much trade from the supermarket giants and hardly stand a chance any more. Great work as usual with marvelous descriptions. 10 Karin Anderson
