The New Norm Poem by Michelle Dragonfly

The New Norm

I hear the jokes they make.
All their jokes about things
That don't deserve joking.

Cancer.

Suicide.

Rape.

Drugs.

Self harm.

Ebola.

Eating disorders.

The list goes on
And on
And on
Forever.

But they really don't care,
Do they?

They just want the laughs.
They just want the attention.
The hilarity that has become
Attached, somehow,
To these tragedies.

Who knows why?

People can be inconsiderate.
Screaming obscenities
Just to get a couple
Followers.
They aren't looking for friends.
Not really.

They just need,
Or rather,
Think they need,
The attention
Ill-won.

Is that really what they want?
Are they gasping for attention
Like a fish out of water
Gasps for breath?

Or is it as a drug?
The more they get,
The more they crave,
Until addiction sets in
And it's far too late for them.
